WAREHOUSE CHECKER (East Fort Avenue)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Working Environment:
You will be required to work outside in various weather conditions, such as rain, snow, cold, or hot temperatures. The only exception is lightning; in that case, we are on standby until it passes. Duties include loading and unloading trucks, containers, and railcars, driving forklifts, stacking, and recouping material, as well as repacking and hand unloading material.
- Filling out paperwork, tallying loading and unloading manifests.
- Cleaning, recouping, and stacking freight in designated areas using sound judgment.
- Fueling vehicles and performing daily maintenance reports.
- You will be required to work outside to count cargo, including lumber in bundles, palletized and loose forms, non-ferrous metals in big bags, ingot, cathode, t-bar, billet, sow, plate, sheet (both bundled and loose forms), loose, bundled, palletized, crated general cargo, steel in coil, rod, billet, plate, slab, and structural forms, bagged ferro alloy commodities, bagged floor-loaded, and palletized soft commodities.
- You are required to wear safety gear at all times while on the job. We will provide hard hats, safety vests, gloves, and goggles as needed. You are expected to report to work properly dressed in uniforms, work boots, rain gear, and/or winter gear. We provide lockers with combination locks to store your gear and uniforms. All clothing and gear must be kept in the lockers.
Work Hours:
Regular work hours are 8 AM – 5 PM. You may be required to work on the pier when the warehouse is not busy. When a vessel is in, everyone is required to work overtime, if applicable, which may include working on Saturdays and Sundays. If you work in shipping, all trucks must be loaded before you leave.

You will be assigned your own forklift. You will be required to inspect and fill out daily maintenance reports. It is your responsibility to note any damages and report them to the supervisor, as well as fuel your forklift when needed. During the unloading of a vessel, your forklift may be required to assist in the discharging process. You will then be assigned another forklift until the discharging is complete.

Whether you are assigned to outbound shipping or ship discharge, you must be able to:
- Run freight to a designated area, use sound judgment, and stack it according to the supervisor’s requirements.
- Recoup any broken bundles and band them using tools and proper safety gear.
- Load or unload trucks, containers, or railcars with the appropriate size forklift within a reasonable time period.
- Take a work order, correctly pull and stage/load freight, and sign off on the work order when completed, ensuring everything on the work order is finished.
- If required by the work order, tally loads prior to shipping, recording heat numbers and weight.
- Keep the work area clean by picking up all trash, banding, and debris.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Advanced MSDS training.
- Understanding building, door, and loading dock locations.
- Understanding sealing and securing requirements for various packaging and cargo.
- Cross-training, mentoring, and OJT procedures, customer service.
- Securing truck jacks and fifth-wheel pin locks.
- Damage and loss control.
- Housekeeping and securing of facilities.
Skills Required:
- Must be able to operate 6,000-10,000 lb. Linde forklifts with several years of experience in material handling; understanding the capacity and limitations of the forklift being used.
- Must have basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills to record information from materials received onto a tally sheet or loading manifest. Additionally, the ability to load trucks based on a work order generated from the office and identify materials unloaded from the vessel with the help of the discharge report.
- Must be able to recoup bundles of ingots weighing up to 90 lbs. each and use banding tools to secure them together.
- Must be able to handle ship gear for loading and unloading of vessels, including pans, chains, nylon straps, copper & t-bar clamps, chokers, and other cables.
- Must be flexible with job assignments, as the nature of the business may require performing different tasks on a daily basis.
